Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has praised United States President Donald Trump for his commitment to supporting the peace deal between Thailand and Cambodia.

Anwar made the joke to Trump during the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), as he recalled hitching a ride earlier in the presidential limousine, Cadillac One — also known as “The Beast”.

ASEAN is deepening economic linkages, widening trade and enhancing competitiveness, the Malaysia Prime Minister and ASEAN chair said at the opening of the twice-yearly leaders’ summit where he welcomed Timor-Leste’s admission to the “family”.

The thriving economies of the United States and Southeast Asia have significant potential to usher in a golden age for both regions, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar remarked that he and Trump “share a lot in common”. “One of which is that I was in prison, and you almost got there,” he quipped, drawing laughter from those present at the ceremony held on the sidelines of the 47th Asean Summit and related meetings here.

Expressing optimism about the shared path ahead, he remarked, “The 21st century is our century -- India and ASEAN's century."
