China’s reliance on trade for growth faces fresh challenges as the United States and many other countries have raised tariffs on Chinese goods.

The leaders of both Canada and Mexico got on the phone with President Donald Trump this past week to seek solutions after he slapped tariffs on their countries, but China’s president appears unlikely to make a similar call soon.

On Tuesday, the U.S. doubled its tariffs on Chinese imports to 20 percent. China in return imposed additional 15 percent duties on American goods.

The judgment was issued in a case brought by the Missouri attorney general. The Chinese government did not respond to the claims in court.

Missouri’s AG won after Chinese representatives didn’t respond to the federal lawsuit. It’s unclear whether the state will see the penalty paid out.

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey secured a $24 billion judgment against the Chinese Communist Party on Friday after a federal judge found the US adversary liable for damages related to the hoarding of personal protective equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic.
