Russia launched a drone strike on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv early on Wednesday, wounding at least six people and damaging buildings in two districts, city officials said. Explosions boomed across the morning sky as Ukraine's air force warned of drones approaching the city and Mayor Vitali Klitschko said air defences were repelling an enemy attack.

Russia early Wednesday morning launched a drone strike on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, injuring no fewer than three people and damaging buildings in two districts. City officials said explosions boomed across the morning sky shortly after Ukraine’s air force warned of drones approaching the city.

A transnational pipeline was shut down on Wednesday after Kyiv refused to renew an agreement that allowed for the transit of Russian gas through its territory.

Ukraine's gas transit operator said Russia had not nominated any gas flows for Jan. 1 through the Ukrainian pipeline to Europe as of 1500 GMT on Tuesday, hours ahead of the expiration of a five-year contract between Gazprom and Ukraine's Naftogaz.

Ukraine, which had allowed Russian oil and gas to cross its territory to serve Europe while fighting Moscow’s invasion since 2022, refused to renew the deal.

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the two countries have engaged in multiple prisoner exchanges.
