VIDEOS: Hurricane Melissa, a monster Atlantic storm, makes landfall in Jamaica with record strength
Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday as a monstrous Category 5 hurricane, bringing fierce 185 mph winds, heavy rain and flooding, life-threatening storm surge, and power outages. Hurricane Melissa is one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record and is the most intense storm to hit Jamaica since records began being kept 174 years ago.
"While we are relieved that Hurricane Melissa has weakened, our primary focus remains on the safety and well-being of all individuals in the affected eastern provinces."
The director of apostolates for a Jamaica-based religious community serving the poor in Kingston said Oct. 28 that the Category-5 Hurricane Melissa seems to be sparing Kingston the worst of its wrath.
"We're concerned about the hurricane, what damages it'll do, because it's the hurricane of the century," Effie Allen said.
Hurricane Melissa will make landfall soon in Jamaica and is expected to hit as a Category 5, making it the strongest storm to ever hit the country. CEO of The Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corp. Robert Hill joins Chris Jansing to share how they are preparing.
