The winter weather this weekend caused travel problems during the busiest time of year. On Sunday, more than 10,000 flights were delayed nationwide, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware. On Monday, the disruption was less severe, with less than 500 flights delayed in the U.S., according to the site.
Minneapolis, Minnesota, is under a winter storm warning until 9 a.m. CT because 1 to 3 inches of snow and gusts up to 40 mph will reduce visibility this morning. In northeast New York and through much of Vermont there is an ice storm warning on Monday morning.
A winter storm is hitting the Midwest with strong winds, snow, ice and canceled flights expected. In Massachusetts and Maine, expect freezing rain.
A massive winter weather system resulted in weather-related watches, warnings or advisories across the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region on Monday – with Metro Detroit in the path of high winds and a burst of snow squalls.
On New Year's Day, the lake effect snow will continue off of lakes Erie and Ontario. That new snow could bring the total snowfall to 1 to 3 feet in places like Orchard Park in upstate New York. In the West, the rain will become more widespread, falling all day on Thursday in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Portland and Seattle.
As a winter storm system pushed east, it wreaked havoc with tornadoes in Illinois and snow, ice, wind, rain and lightning for a wide swath of the nation.
A winter storm warning is in place for the eastern and western U.P. and most of the Lower Peninsula, mainly along the western snowbelt. A high wind warning is in effect for southeast Michigan because of the potential for 60 mph wind gusts. The Great Lakes are under storm, gale, and heavy freezing spray warnings.
The National Weather Service has also issued a wind advisory for 16 New Jersey counties Monday with up to 50 mph gusts possible.
