With Melissa reaching Category 5 status on Monday, the 2025 hurricane season becomes only the second in recorded history to have three Category 5 storms in one year.
Now, after days of torrential rainfall and strong winds, seven reported fatalities, and with maximum sustained wind speeds reaching a devastating 185 mph, Melissa has made history as the first Category 5 hurricane in recorded history to make landfall in Jamaica.
Jamaica's central location in the Caribbean, the island has never recorded a direct landfall from a Category 4 or 5 hurricane, according to records from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) dating back to 1850.
Forecasters say Melissa is moving toward the north-northeast at around 21 mph and is expected to continue accelerating northeastward.
Hotter-than-average Caribbean water made Hurricane Melissa stronger and wetter. Its part of a trend that scientists link back to climate change.
