Baltimore’s top prosecutor is no longer seeking to vacate the murder conviction of Adnan Syed, the man whose case garnered national attention in the “Serial” podcast over a decade ago.

Baltimore prosecutors have announced their decision to withdraw a motion to vacate Adnan Syed's murder conviction even as they support his recent request for a sentence reduction.

Syed, whose case garnered international attention after the “Serial” podcast, has a hearing Wednesday seeking to reduce his sentence and allow him to remain free.

Serial podcast subject Adnan Syed was freed in 2022 after prosecutors questioned evidence presented during the trial over the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, but then in 2023, it was reinstated.

Adnan Syed’s murder conviction will be reinstated after Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates announced the withdrawal of the motion to vacate judgment.

The decision from Baltimore prosecutors comes ahead of a scheduled hearing Wednesday morning where a judge will consider whether to reduce Syed’s sentence, but this means the conviction itself is no longer in question.
