Lawmakers rallied around the HALT Fentanyl Act on Thursday, successfully passing the legislation in the House to classify the opioid as a Schedule I controlled substance in an effort to solidify

The legislation permanently reclassifies fentanyl as a Schedule I drug, meaning it has no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. Other drugs with Schedule I classification, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), include heroin, LSD, marijuana, ecstasy and peyote.

Congress is taking steps they say will help prevent fentanyl overdoses and increase penalties for drug traffickers. Congress approved what’s known as Halt All Lethal Trafficking or the “HALT” Fentanyl Act.
