Most DC fast-charging operators in the U.S. prohibit non-approved adapters. Extension cables and breakaway adapters are also banned. Using an adapter at a DC fast charging station in the United States is slowly becoming the norm.

Ford says it's done sending out all the complimentary NACS adapters that 140,000 EV customers in the US had reserved. The automaker announced in 2023 that it was working with Tesla to give Ford EV owners access to tens of thousands of Superchargers across the US and Canada.

Ford was the first of a deluge of automakers to announce support for the Tesla-pioneered North American Charging System. A year later, it was the first to make good on the pledge by supplying a free NACS charging adapter to any owner who requested one between February and June of 2024.
