The Wisconsin Department of Justice is asking a judge to immediately put on hold his order that would require elections officials to verify the citizenship of all 3.6 million registered Wisconsin voters before the next statewide election in February.
Wisconsin does not require proof of citizenship to vote. A judge's order requires WEC to verify voter rolls and check new voters' citizenship status.
The ruling requires the Wisconsin Elections Commission to review the state's voter rolls over the next five months.
Groups such as The MacIver Institute have been working with the Election Integrity Network Coalition to push for stronger requirements to verify that only those eligible to vote are allowed to do so in Wisconsin.
