The Texas Senate on Wednesday overwhelmingly voted to pass new criminal justice legislation that would further restrict cashless bail and keep more defendants in jail, including people who are living in the country illegally.

Opponents of the bail reform package say the proposed changes are based on false pretenses and could unjustly keep innocent people in jail.

Texas lawmakers are discussing five proposed bail reforms, including one to prevent undocumented defendants from posting bail for felony charges, and another to give judges discretion to hold
