NUUK, Greenland (AP) — Troops from several European countries continued to arrive in Greenland on Thursday in a show of support for Denmark as talks among representatives of Denmark, Greenland and the U.S. highlighted “fundamental disagreement” over the future of the Arctic island.

Several NATO countries are deploying small numbers of military personnel to Greenland to participate in joint exercises with Denmark as US President Donald Trump ramps up his threats to forcibly annex the Arctic island.

Denmark deployed soldiers to both Iraq and Afghanistan when America launched the Global War on Terrorism. Fifty of their soldiers never came home. Now the United States refuses to rule out military action to seize Greenland from the NATO ally.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced that soliders are in Greenland to take part in a joint military exercise as Trump continues his push to take over the island.

On paper, this token force is being deployed to bolster the island's security in response to U.S. complaints. What is extraordinary, perhaps even unprecedented, is that it serves as message more to the U.

A possible war with NATO is escalating after Denmark made it clear to military leaders that if the United States fires on its forces, Danish defenders must fight back. The comments come after Stephen Miller,

The European Union can help provide security for Greenland, should Denmark request it, the European Commissioner for Defence and Space said, warning that a U.S. military takeover of the island would be the end of NATO.

With a total population of 6 million, Denmark’s military is not among the largest in the world, but it is equipped with highly modern and technologically advanced weaponry.
