According to the hurricane center, Hurricane Melissa has a significant possibility of making landfall on Jamaica as a major hurricane and could maintain major hurricane strength when it reaches eastern Cuba. Forecasters say Melissa poses little to no risk for Florida and the U.S. at this time.

Melissa is expected to become a Category 5 hurricane by Sunday night, Oct. 26, and have catastrophic impacts on islands in the northern Caribbean.

Though the risk to Florida is low, parts of the Caribbean are in peril. Tropical Storm Melissa is expected to power up to a major hurricane. Though its chances of affecting Florida are low, it can't be ruled out.

Several inches of rain fell in parts of Brevard County and Lake County in Florida, causing major flooding along streets, roadways, and in some neighborhoods.

Melissa is forecast to become a hurricane by Saturday, Oct. 25, and a major hurricane by Sunday, Oct. 26, the Hurricane Center said. Current forecasts predict Melissa will be a Category 4 storm early next week. A major hurricane is one that is a Category 3 or higher, with maximum sustained winds of at least 111 mph.

Melissa is expected to bring life-threatening and catastrophic flash flooding and landslides to Jamaica and southern Hispaniola through the weekend.
