Hurricane Hunters forced to turn back after facing ‘forces stronger than normal’ in eye of Melissa
The Hurricane Hunters returned to their operating location in Curacao because they experienced “forces stronger than normal” while flying into the eye of Hurricane Melissa. Nearly 1,500 people have been evacuated from vulnerable areas in the Bahamas.

Before Hurricane Melissa, the most damaging hurricane to hit Jamaica was Gilbert, which struck the island in September 1988. Gilbert was a Category 4 hurricane when it made landfall and caused tremendous damage from intense winds, storm surge and flooding. Tens of thousands were left homeless, and 49 people were killed.
Parts of the Caribbean are conducting search and rescue operations and surveying the extensive destruction Hurricane Melissa brought to the region, leaving dozens of people dead and drawing an outpouring of support from the international community.
