With sustained winds of 175 mph and a powerful central pressure of 906 millibars — among the 11 lowest on record — Melissa will go down as not only Jamaica’s strongest hurricane but among the most powerful of all time and part of an ultrarare trio in 2025.
There is no infrastructure in the region that can withstand a Category 5,” Prime Minister Andrew Holness said.
Melissa is now a Category 1 moving through the Bahamas after the storm made a historic landfall in Jamaica as one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes in history.
Hurricane Melissa is slamming eastern Cuba on Wednesday morning, Oct. 29, after hammering Jamaica on Tuesday and causing widespread damage.
