A rare winter storm charging through Texas and the northern Gulf Coast on Tuesday has closed highways and airports and prompted the first blizzard warning for southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana.

School districts across the New Orleans metro area canceled school again Thursday, the third day of cancellations due to the severe winter storm, raising the possibility of make-up school days later this year.

New Orleans has received more than twice the snowfall as Anchorage this winter — underscoring Southcentral Alaska’s meager snow season as much as the rare winter storm that pummelled that subtropical Louisiana city this week.

The storm that struck New Orleans this week left the Gulf Coast city under twice as much snow as Anchorage, Alaska has received in nearly two months. "New Orleans, we'd like our snow back," the NWS Anchorage office said.

FOX Weather Correspondent Brandy Campbell spoke with New Orleans residents about the historic winter storm that blanketed the city with snow. One of whom was a parent who was able to help his children enjoy snow for the first time by having them sled down a hill.

New Orleans has received more snowfall since the start of meteorological winter than many cold-weather cities across the country.

Snowball fights are taking place in New Orleans, which hasn't seen snow in 15 years. Up to 10 inches fell in parts of the city. Here & Now's Lisa Mullins talks with WWNO reporter Matt Bloom about how the Big Easy is grappling with all the snow.
