Morgan Rielly breaks 3rd-period tie in the Maple Leafs’ 5-2 opening victory over the Canadiens
Morgan Rielly broke a tie at 9:02 of the third period and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Montreal Canadiens 5-2 on Wednesday night in the regular-season opener for both teams.
The back-to-back with the Buffalo Sabres this weekend will have no shortage of lineup intrigue for the Maple Leafs:
Even before he scored the goal that won the Toronto Maple Leafs their season opener, something looked different, felt different, with Rielly. This was more like vintage Rielly — the Rielly who belongs right near the top of the scoring leaderboard for Leafs defencemen.
Rielly (undisclosed) is expected to play against Buffalo on Saturday, Mark Masters of TSN reports. Rielly should be back on the top pairing and the first power-play unit after sitting out Friday's 5-3 loss to the Sabres.
To that end, he met with Berube and general manager Brad Treliving during the summer asking how he could elevate his game. The response: Get back to the free-flowing style that had made him successful prior to 2024-25. Judging by his play Wednesday, he received the message loud and clear.
Rielly was on the ice briefly on Thursday, but didn't join the rest of his Maple Leafs teammates for a full practice.
