President Donald Trump named foreign policy adviser and loyalist Richard Grenell interim executive director of the Kennedy Center on Monday, days after appointing himself chair, solidifying his control over the iconic American cultural institution.

President Donald Trump said on Monday that special U.S. envoy Richard Grenell will serve as the interim executive director of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington after announcing plans on Friday to shake up its board.

Grenell has been tapped for a number of positions during Trump's two administrations. He is currently serving as presidential envoy for special missions. He was most recently in Venezuela, where he secured the release of six American citizens detained in the country after he met with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in Caracas.
