WASHINGTON (AP) — President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and President Donald Trump expressed hope that Monday’s critical talks with Ukrainian and European leaders at the White House could lead to trilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring an end to Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Donbas, consisting of Donetsk and Luhansk, is at the heart of Moscow’s goals. An industrial powerhouse in the Soviet era, it also has rich farmland, important rivers and a coastline on the Sea of Azov.

The US president says Russia's Putin is "expecting a call" immediately after his talks with Zelensky and European leaders.

President Trump has abandoned a push for a cease-fire, arguing instead for a full peace agreement, a position held by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Under the proposed Russian deal, Kyiv would fully withdraw from the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions in return for a Russian pledge to freeze the front lines in the southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, the sources said.

Russia’s illegal seizure of the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine in March 2014 was quick and bloodless, and it sent Moscow’s relations with the West into a downward spiral unseen since the Cold War.

The highly anticipated summit ended without a breakthrough. Afterwards, Trump said Ukraine and Russia should proceed straight to seeking a full peace deal instead of a cease-fire.

The protections that the US and Europe would be able to provide to Ukraine are similar to NATO's collective defense mandate.

Speaking after Friday’s summit, President Putin again implied that the war is all about Russia’s diminished status since the fall of the Soviet Union.

During multiple press interviews on Sunday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio touted alleged progress at President Donald Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, while offering few specifics to back up his claims.
