Sumter Today is presented by University of South Carolina Sumter On Friday, Feb. 13, a group of about 10–15 protesters, many of them Sumter School District students, gathered in downtown Sumter to protest ICE and raise concerns about the treatment of immigrants. As the group marched, they chanted, “Brick by brick, wall by wall, this racist system has got to fall,” drawing a mix of attention and gestures of encouragement from some people along the route. The Meeting House is Sumter’s newest event venue, and it’s historical past was celebrated recently at its grand opening. The home of the family of General Thomas Sumter, the American Revolutionary general who is Sumter’s namesake, was renovated at the corner of Memorial Park in the historic district.
