TROUT ON THE MOVE -- MDC staff from Montauk and Lost Valley hatcheries recently transported more than 200,000 4-inch rainbow trout into hatchery pools at Montauk. Historic flooding in November halted production at the Montauk hatchery until it can be repaired. Staff at MDC Lost Valley and Chesapeake hatcheries have been raising rainbow trout from eggs and transferring them to Montauk this spring. This aspect of the statewide hatchery system working as one has greatly benefitted the production of

TU’s Conservation Hydrology Program is experimenting with using AI in their work. These time lapse photos are from one of their meadows sites in California, where they are testing USGS’s Flow Photo Explorer machine learning model to develop new approaches for collecting hydrologic data at sites that are hard to reach during the winter months. Stay up to date with their work at @tu_conservationhydrology. | Trout Unlimited

Exciting initiatives are underway for native brook trout across New York, specifically in the South Moose River Plains, where Trout Unlimited and DEC are teaming up to assess, study, and improve their habitat. The team has identified some 30 barriers within the South Moose that, once removed, will reconnect over 30 miles of previously fragmented native brook trout habitat. Tune into “Connected Conservation,” a new film produced by Frequent Flyers, which showcases the effort to reconnect critical

You can tell Spring is just around the corner when the rainbow trout begin their spawning run in the Finger Lakes tributaries. The spring spawning run is a great opportunity for DEC Biologists to sample the rainbow trout population. This week on Catharine Creek, the main tributary to Seneca Lake, fisheries staff from our Region 8 (Western Finger Lakes) Office were electrofishing for trout. Electrofishing, a sampling method that uses pulses of electricity in the water, is the best way to collect

Brook Trout Conservation Underway: In 2024, 300 brook trout were moved to three unoccupied streams. Surveys on those streams in summer 2025 found newly hatched, or young of year, brook trout—a clear sign that natural reproduction had occurred. This fall, DNR biologists repeated the process to augment the populations in those same streams with 150 new spawning-age fish. | Maryland Department of Natural Resources Fisheries

As our state freshwater fish, brook trout, hold a pretty special place in New York’s natural history, but the effects from acid precipitation and competition with non-native fish have impacted their populations over the last several decades. Check out our latest video to learn more about what DEC Fisheries staff are doing to preserve heritage (native) strain brook trout in New York State. Spoiler alert: it’s pretty interesting! | NYS Department of Environmental Conservation

We had a great turnout for the annual rainbow trout sampling at Naples Creek in Ontario County. Each spring, adult rainbow trout leave Canandaigua Lake and swim up Naples Creek to reproduce. The creek's gravel bottom provides a great place for trout to deposit eggs. #TroutWeek | NYS Department of Environmental Conservation
