A lightning strike sparked the South Canyon Fire near Glenwood Springs 25 years ago. On July 6, 1994- fast moving flames took the lives of 14 firefighters. Lessons Learned from tragic South Canyon Fire. A group of 13 VCFD chiefs, captains, engineers and firefighters traveled to Glenwood Springs, CO, last week. Their mission was to walk in the footsteps of firefighters who were on Storm King Mountain June 6, 1994, when a tragic fire killed 14 firefighters.
